Can You Hear Me? by Jasper1863Hale

Can You Hear Me? By Jasper1863Hale http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7476890/1/Can_You_Hear_Me
Jasper is new to Forks and due to an accident when he was younger, he is a mute. Luckily a certain Cullen is there to show him the ropes and help him to communicate. AH, Slash, M for lemons. *2nd place winner 'Most Promising WIP' The Torch Awards*
Twilight - Rated: M - English - Hurt/Comfort/Romance - Jasper/Edward

The story starts out on Jasper's first day at a new school, Forks High.  He's gone to many different schools over that past few years.  At 14 Jasper was attacked by a dog and now is unable to speak.  He knows sign language, but unfortunately his father or Pa as he calls him, isn't very good with it.  He feels very isolated, no friends, no family, other than his dad.  He's always the new kid.  Always alone.

When he goes to the office to check in, he finds out a student has been assigned to help him find his way around. That student is Edward Cullen.  He's fluent in sign language which is a first for Jasper.  His father has tried to learn, but usually Jasper has to write out what he wants to say.  He's thrilled that he can communicate with Edward.  Things heat up really quickly between these two, there's attraction, but much more.  Jasper's excited to finally have someone he considers a friend, someone who he can really talk to.   He's really attracted to Edward, and soon finds out that Edward feels the same.     Jasper's emotions get to him and Edward is there for him, I love how he is so sweet and caring for a boy he hardly knows.....

"He began lightly rocking side to side as he held me and I cried against his shoulder, soaking his shirt worse than the rain had. A gentle rumble began in his throat and it took me a moment to realise he was humming along to the classical music coming from his stereo. He just held me for several minutes until I cried myself dry.

Feeling embarrassed, I raised my hand and wiped at my eyes as I eased my way out of his arms and back into the seat. I had known Edward less than two hours and here I was crying on his shoulder. But what surprised me more was that he didn't object. He had held me until I was done crying. He had comforted me and somehow I knew he was willing to listen, to let me talk everything out, and would be there to help me through.

*I'm sorry, Edward.*

'Don't be. I told you this is good. You've obviously been holding a lot in all this time, you need to let it go.'

*You won't judge me for anything will you? I hardly know you, you hardly know me but, I feel like I can trust you.*

'You can, Jasper. Now, when you feel like you're ready, then let some more out. Talk to me, tell me anything and everything.'"

There really is an edge to this story, some of the other kids can't resist picking on Jasper, he's bullied and taunted daily.  Finally they get him alone one day and beat him really badly.  Edward finds him and the next thing he knows he's waking up in the hospital.   This is a big turning point in Jasper's life, he decides that he's had enough.  His Pa's first reaction is to find somewhere else for them to move to, but Jasper is having none of that.  For the first time in his life he tells his dad how he really feels. How he's tired of constantly moving, how he has friends here.  How he wants the kids that beat him up to know he's not afraid and he's not leaving....

"If you want to go then go. I'm not moving again, we've only been here over a week. I'm done with running from things, I'm not running away this time."

I had never in all my life spoken or signed to my Pa in such a manner before. I could tell from his expression that he wasn't amused by my disobedience and his tiredness didn't help that either. As he spoke, I was already typing my rebuttal.

"Jasper, you're being unreasonable and I don't appreciate your tone. Now get ready, we're leaving."

"You think you know what is best for me, but you don't. Every time someone kicks my head in, you take me away to somewhere else and it just starts all over again. Well, I'm not leaving this time. For the first time since the accident I finally have some friends and they're standing by me through this. They're accepting me for what I am, it's what I need. I don't want a life of constantly running away in fear, I want to stay here where I have friends who support me. If you want to go then just go, I'm staying here and I'll make do somehow, but I'm not leaving."

I really like how this story is playing out, Jasper has so much stacked against him.  He just wants to be treated like a normal boy, have friends, fall in love and be happy.  With Edward in his life those things just might happen.  Edward is so kind and caring, always ready to let Jasper lead.  And always there when he needs support or just a shoulder to cry on.  It's fun to see all the new things Jasper experiences, he hasn't tried to play sports since his injury and he realizes he really likes trying.  Since he always wears a scarf to cover his scars, it makes things a little difficult at times.  But He seems to be willing to try almost anything.  It feels like he's finally ready to start living his life.

This story really is told very beautifully, I can't tell you how many times I got choked up over Jasper and his circumstance.  It's hard enough being a teenager, but  to try and go through High School not being able to communicate would be so tough.  He's been bullied constantly and ended up in the hospital on numerous occasions.  He's never had  a boyfriend, or any friends at all.  It's easy to see why he would want to try to start a life in Forks.   Jasper1863Hale should really be proud of this story, she's doing a great job along with her beta  KellenCougar.  Check it out this wonderful story, you won't be sorry.
